JFK was on to something here. Let's take a moment to consider the quality of perseverance. No doubt we can all agree that is is important to have some constancy in our lives; but where is such a persistence a virtue and where an obstacle to ethical behaviour? Blind persistence without rational thought and evaluation will drive us like lemmings over cliffs.  Consider that most religious extremists for example certainly persevere despite even to the loss of their very lives. Should we consider that a virtue when such stubbourness creates death and misery? Ethically speaking, I don't think we can.  Here in America, we often chide our politicians for "flip-flopping", but should not an intelligent man evaluate his positions in the light of new evidence?  Perseverance can lead us to excel beyond our wildest fantasies, to create great works or art or technology; to achieve the dim dreams our forefathers could only speculate upon. Constancy of character can lead to great things, but it must be tempered with reason, compassion, and empathy to achieve those lofty heights. Without those other principles we quite literally are "beating a dead horse".

This blog was created to bring attention to everyday guys who consistently do their best to be one of the good guys.  It isn't about ego stroking, it is about providing exposure to men who create positive role models for others. Real men, not the wealthy, the famous, or those who life has handed a golden ticket to (though I might occasionally feature some). They should have it easy. This is about demonstrating that there are good guys out there in all walks of life, who try their best despite life's hardships, and provide an example for others.
